LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Leaders create the conditions in which others can give of their best in pursuit of a great cause. They create the belief and expectation that remarkable things can be done; and they nurture individuals and build relationships so that those things can be achieved. They give enough of themselves to allow others to trust and understand, but never put themselves ahead of the cause.

Sir Jon Coles, Chief Executive

Who we are

Leading a school is amongst the most important, meaningful and rewarding roles society has to offer. No other role offers such opportunity to shape the future of society through shaping young lives and improving life chances.

Almost uniquely amongst leadership roles, headteachers embody their schools – looked to by staff, parents and pupils as the central figure in determining the school’s success and failure.  Yet heads succeed through building strong leadership teams – and the best schools build leadership throughout their staff and pupil bodies.

Through this site, we are looking to attract talented teachers to lead in some of the most inspiring schools in the country.  We look forward to hearing from you.

I know how valuable and rewarding school leadership can be; both personally and professionally.

In my current role, overseeing the performance of academies across our Group, I have the pleasure of seeing examples of excellent leadership every day and understanding the impact that good leadership can have in running a happy and successful school.

Over the course of my teaching career, I have progressed from initial positions as a classroom teacher through middle leadership onto headship and beyond. Whilst never losing touch with my key love of teaching, through this I have been able to expand my skillset and develop as a professional through leadership roles – and many school staff seek to do the same.

What we offer as a larger group is the scope to do just that – to train and develop into leadership positions, to share expertise as subject specialist advisors or to join new schools in more senior roles.

Autonomy in school leadership has been one of the main drivers of success over the past 15 years, nowhere more so than in primary schools.

The delegation of powers to primary leaders is more exacting and demanding than many expect and the opportunity to flourish is significant; even (and often, most spectacularly) in the smallest of schools.

In all of our primaries, we have staff that excel in classroom best practice and subject-specialist delivery; these are key strands of school leadership that we look to build. Likewise, there are many ambitious and experienced teachers looking to take the steps from middle to senior leadership or further.

The benefits of being part of a wider group of schools are numerous for new and experienced leaders – on a national, regional and subject level. For all stages of school leadership, we aim to offer the necessary training, pathways and mentorship to ensure that our staff can continually progress with expertise and experience.

A national network

We know being a leader can be lonely sometimes, but not at United Learning.

United Learning is a national, growing group of academies and independent schools. By working together we bring out the best in everyone: our pupils, our staff, and the wider community. We believe that together we achieve more than any single teacher, department or school could alone.

As part of our Group, your career opportunities are genuinely nationwide. United Learning can offer leadership opportunities from Carlisle to Bournemouth in both the independent and state sectors, and at every stage from primary to sixth form.

Ours schools work together at regional level as 'clusters', sharing knowledge and resources. They are also connected virtually by our intranet, ensuring that everyone has access to a national network of support. They help everyone to provide education as effectively and efficiently as possible, and to reduce workloads.

With the support of Heads, Regional Directors, the Senior Leadership Team, and our central support function, you’ll always have someone to turn to. Our Group Education Forums and Annual Leadership Conference bring our leaders together several times each year. Meanwhile our coaching network and Directory of Good Practice give you access to guidance from colleagues across the Group.

Shared curriculum and expertise

As part of United Learning, you will gain access to our shared curriculum containing a plethora of lesson-by-lesson resources and formative assessment tasks, created by our expert subject advisors with contributions from hundreds of teachers across the Group. Our schools also take part in our national enrichment programme, which provides opportunities that our pupils might never have had access to outside of our Group, from performing onstage at the Lyceum Theatre to designing competition-winning apps.

You'll also have the support of our Central Office staff, based in Peterborough with offices in London and Salford, who provide educational and business support for your school. Our in-house experts include a Finance Business Partner to support you through budget-setting season and keep you on-budget throughout the year. The award-winning HR team will guide you with recruitment, retention and HR issues to support you in building the best teams. Also available is legal advice, a dedicated IT support desk, data, health and safety and estates experts. You can also make use of the Marketing team and our PR agency to help you manage your school’s reputation. By providing services effectively and efficiently, they ensure you can focus on educational leadership.
